Earl of Melrose and first earl of Haddington. One of a group of important Scots summoned for preliminary discussions at Whitehall who met to produce and agree on a range of minor issues. Also served on a subcommittee to collate hostile laws to be repealed (October-December 1604). Known as an efficient public prosecutor. Consolidated aristocratic position through familial alliances. Favoured under James VI and also Charles I. Received at court (1625). Returned to Scotland
