Master of Lovat. Studied law at St Andrews University. Recalled by father, Lord Lovat, to participate in Jacobite rising of 1745 but did so with lack of enthusiasm - avoided Culloden. Voluntary surrender 1747, imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle, released with full pardon in 1750. Continued legal studies at University of Glasgow. Admitted as an advocate (1752) moving to London shortly thereafter. Practised at English bar. Travelled to North America with the 78th foot in 1758. Returned to Europe c.1762 and was in Portugal with a British expeditionary force. Died at his house in Downing Street, London in 1782.
