First Lord Newark. Initially joined Swedish military but enticed to leave Sweden (1640) to join covenanters in the bishop’s wars. Appointed major-general in Scottish army (1643) and crossed into England in 1644. Present at the battle of Marston Moor. Commanded three regiments during wars of the three kingdoms. Recalled to Scotland the following year and appointed commander of the army (c.1645). Was at Battle of Worcester but escaped only to be captured in Yorkshire. Newark was then taken to London and imprisoned in Tower of London until 1660. Created Lord Newark after restoration as reward for his services. Died 1682.
