Apprenticed to Aberdeen merhcant in 1669 and continues in business world. Stood as Tory candidate in 1711 election and elected MP for Aberdeen Burghs. Joined the October Club. Voted in favour of Scottish toleration bill (1712) but for trade interests. Did not stand for re-election in 1713.
