Younger son of lesser laird who sought continual advancement, often through investment and land purchases. Unsuccessfully stood for Linlithgowshire (1708). Under-secretary of state for Scotland (1709), private secretary to Duke of Queensbury. MP for Buteshire at by-election ( February 1710) as a nominee of the Court peer Lord Bute. Only held seat until September. Died 1725.
