Represented Elginshire without contest for over twenty years (1720-41). Appointed lord lyon king of arms (1727). Voted consistently with the Government. Surrendered Elginshire seat in 1741 but brought in as MP for Caithness (1741-7). MP for Inverness Burghs (1747-54). Died 1754.
