Bound apprentice joiner in Glasgow at about 14. Served for 7 years, but could not find work for a whole year. Pressed as a mariner at Newcastle (c.1733). Discharged at Portsmouth, Michaelmas 1740. Examined as a vagrant at Brompton and served with removal order (1740).
