Born in Leith, but after some years moved to Ireland with his mother to be with his father, a soldier.  Subsequently moved to England and worked as a labourer at Liverpool, and then a miner in Wales.  Became a sailor about six years previously, but was taken prisoner by corsairs and held at Spain for 22 months.  Landed at Dover following his release, and has been en route to Scotland.  Examined as a vagrant at Kirkletham and served with a removal order/ 23 February 1749.
