Elected as a Tory MP for Dumfriesshire (1741-7), voting against the Government. During siege of the castle of Stirling travelled from London with messages from leading Jacobites to the Young Pretender and information regarding a sum of money in London for the Prince's use. Led to Douglas' arrest for high treason and imprisonment in the Tower of London. Due to lack of corroborating evidence Douglas was released in 1748. Died 1778.
