Joint solicitor-general (1709-14) and solicitor-general (Scotland, 1714-17). Entered Parliament at a by-election for Queensferry (1705-7). A would-be courtier, Stewart found it difficult to gain credit with the ministry due to his father's antipathy to the Union. Won seat as MP for Edinburgh (1713). Signatory to the proclamation of George I. With appointment as solicitor-general had no need for seat in Westminster though remained politically active in Scotland. Died 1727.
