Prosperous wine merchant. Lord Provost of Edinburgh (1744-5). Returned as MP for Edinburgh as an opposition Whig. Continued voting with the opposition, after Walpole's fall, as part of the Duke of Argyll's gang - voted against the Hanoverians. Failed to organise an effective defense against Prince Charles Edward who entered Edinburgh in 1745. Stewart was arrested and taken before the Privy Council in London. Imprisoned in Tower of London (1745-7). Trial returned verdict of 'not guilty'. Rather than returning to Scotland, transferred business interests to London, taking up residence at 11 Buckingham Street. Died at Bath in 1780.
