Took a commission in the foot regiment of Lord John Murray (1695). When the regiment disbanded, attended University of Leiden to study civil law, called to the bar in 1701. Entered Scottish parliament in 1706 and supported Court and Union. Selected as one of the Scottish representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain. Returned to a military career in 1708 - captaincy in Scots Food Guards with rank of lieutenant-colonel. Simultaneously pursued politics as MP for Fifeshire (1708-09). Died in London January 1709.
