Long political career in both Scottish and British Parliaments. Supported the Union in Scottish seat of Haddingtonshire. Included in the Squadrone contingent of representatives to the first Parliament of Great Britain. Elected MP for Haddingtonshire (1708-41) and quickly established himself as one of leaders of Squadrone in the Commons. Often listed as a Whig though at times found common ground to vote with the Scottish Tories. Supported the Government until 1733, when he joined the opposition to Walpole. Died 1758. Also occupied himself with agricultural improvement.
