Son of wealthy Inverness merchant who had prominent role in local affairs. Duff helped father with business affairs, often acting as his representative. Unlike his father, Duff supported the Revolution, opposed the Union, served briefly at Westminster, drifted towards Jacobitism and finally settled down under the Hanoverian regime. MP for Inverness Burghs. Held Tory sympathies during time in Parliament. Did not stand for re-election in 1710. Returned to Scotland where he lived prosperously and peacefully until death in 1726.
