Entered army but sold his commission (1718). Sent to Sweden in employ of Lord Carteret, who made Hope Governor of Bermuda (1721). MP for Kinross-shire (1727-34), voting with the Administration. Hope then followed Carteret into opposition (1730). Re-elected 1741, initially in opposition but supporting Government after Carteret joined the ministry (1742). Died 1766.
