13th Earl of Morton. Entered army after escaping prosecution for murder (1685). Retired from army (1709) and turned attention to Parliamentary career. Elected MP for Linlithgow Burghs (1708-13), 1715-22), supported Duke of Queensbury. Obtained alternate seat in next election on family's interest in Orkney and Shetland (1713-15, 1722-30). Best classed as a Whig who, at times, voted with the Tories. Upon succession of title as Earl, also elected a representative peer. Government support for Upper House but not re-elected in 1734. Died 1738.
