Son of Archibald Johnston of Wariston. Lived in the Netherlands following his father's execution (1663). Assisted in gathering intelligence about resistance to James II in England. Appointed William III's envoy to Berlin (1689). Recalled and made secretary of state for Scotland (1692). Dismissed (1696). Major advisor on Scottish affairs early in Queen Anne's reign, and appointed lord register (1704), but dismissed (1705). MP for Ilchester (1708). Did not stand for re-election and retired from public life (1713).
