Entered Scottish Parliament as MP for Haddingtonshire (1690-1703) and Peeblesshire (1702-7). Was a hereditary burgess of Peeblesshire and of Edinburgh (1684) and Glasgow (1707). Initially allied with the Opposition, followed the Court from c.1702. Rewarded by the Duke of Queensbury with a place on the union commission (1706) and an elevation to the Scottish privy council (1707). Well-connected through familial ties when he entered Westminister, first as a representative in the first Parliament of Great Britain, then as MP for Peeblesshire. Classed as a Hanoverian and Whig. Active Parliamentary member though in later Parliaments (1713, etc.) relatively lackluster - possibly due to financial pressures and death of first wife. Did not stand for re-election. Died 1739.
