Brother of Haldane, Mungo. Professor of Greek (1705-7) and of ecclesiastical history (1707-18) at the University of St. Andrews, Haldane was called to the bar in 1715. Appointed a commissioner of the equivalent (Nov 1715-May 1716). Elected as a Whig candidate for Perth Burghs. Voted with the Government. Appointed a judge of the court of session (1721) with support of the Dukes of Roxburghe and Montrose (against Duke of Argyll and Lord Ilay) which resulted in unfounded persecution of Haldane. Did not seek Parliamentary re-election in 1722. Appointed joint solicitor-general of Scotland (1746). Retired in 1755. Died 1769.
