Called to the bar (1755) and practiced law in Edinburgh. Member of the Select Society, an independent Whig. Elected MP for Perth Burghs, seems to have allied with Bute, though largely considered unconnected. Life not consumed by politics - opened first Dundee bank (1763) and became heavily involved in affairs of the East India Company (elected director in 1772). Accepted office of secretary to the Thistle (1765-1818) under the Rockingham Administration, following the Rockinghams into Opposition. Travelled to France (1777-79). Upon return, continued to make his mark in Parliament, being considered a conscientious member who sought to curb taxation and reduce the national debt. Well-liked in Scotland, seeking to develop fisheries, industry and communications. Died 1818.
