Professional soldier with little political interest prior to 1708. Stood in disputed Clackmannanshire election but entered parliament as MP for Ross-shire in a by-election (1710). Took seat in March but then went with regiment to Flanders, returning in 1711. Identified himself as a Tory, though object was to further his military career. Re-elected on a Whig interest for Ross-shire, but with backing of the Tory administration. Again elected in 1715 with help of Cromarty Mackenzies, alongside his own family interests. Politically viewed as a Tory, continuing in opposition and allied with the Duke of Aryll. Lost seat in 1722 election but through Argyll was made lord lieutenant of Ross-shire (1725). Regained seat in 1727. Died at Bath in 1732.
