MP in Scottish Parliament for Renfrew (1689-95) and Dunbarton (1702-7). Supported the Revolution, but later joined the cavalier wing of the Scottish Country party. Opposed the Union and actively entered into Jacobite conspiracy, only to become a placeman under Lord Oxford. Elected MP for Wigtown Burghs (1708) on interest of the Earl of Galloway. Politics driven by obtaining the best advantages for Scotland, seeing as how he could not prevent the Union. Loyal supporter of Tory Administration (1711) and appointed joint keeper of the Scottish signet. Retired from political life in 1713. Died 1717.
