Son of Sir George Johnston. Entered military, probably serving in the Netherlands. Commissioned a captain of the new Scottish regiment under Colonel Wachop (1688). At Chester in 1689. Party to the abduction of Mary Wharton in London 14 November 1690. Was arrested two days later and imprisoned. Trial between 10-17 December. Found guilty though great efforts made to save his life. Executed 23 December 1690 and buried at St Giles-in-the-Fields.
