Studied philosophy and mathematics and Marischal College. Was going to enter the ministry and received a license to preach though seems to have travelled before taking over the family business and estate at Eggie. Travelled across England (1737-8). Conducted a short ministry at Newport (1739). Then became private chaplain to John Hopkins of Brettons, near Essex. Shortly after, travelled to France before returning to Edinburgh (1741). Appointed professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College where he proved a successful lecturer. Published a number of works. Summer of 1750 embarked on a European tour. On the return home from the Netherlands, the ship foundered and he was drowned (1751). Brother to Fordyce, Alexander, Fordyce, James (London) and Fordyce, William
