Though a mathematician, also took up the ministry, acting as a minister in Stranrear and in Ayrshire. Invented the ‘rotula arithmetica’ (almost like a proto-calculator). Received a Scottish patent. Sought to try his fortune in London and moved there c.1712. Died, presumably in London in 1730.
