Pupil of Allan Ramsay with whom he went to Italy with. Upon his return, Martin became a student at he academy in St Martin's Lane, London. Worked on a number of commissions and established his own studio by 1770. Contributed works to exhibitions of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1765-1777) and elected to the positions of treasurer, vice-president, and president between 1772 and 1777. Also exhibited portraits at the Free Society of Artists (1767) and at the Royal Academy (1779, 1790). Moved to Edinburgh in 1780 where he died in 1797.
