Son of Christopher Seton, gem engraver, who was a pupil of Charles Christian Reisen. Practiced in London and became Director of the Society of Artists (1765). Died 1768. His son, John Thomas, studied at the St Martin's Lane Academy and was a pupil of Francis Hayman. Embarked on tour of Rome (1758-9). For a time lived in Bath but also resided in Edinbrugh (1772-4). Travelled to Calcutta in 1775 but returned to Edinburgh where he presumably died.
