Initially James II tried to dismiss Gibson from service for his whiggish politics. Promoted to major and accompanied expedition of William of Orange (1688). Advanced to rank of lieutenant-colonel (1689) and a colonel in (1694). Appointed lieutenant-governor of Portsmouth (1689-1717). Commander of the land forces in Newfoundland (1697-1704). Upon return settled in Portsmouth. Knighted (1705) and was MP for Portsmouth (1696, 1702) with substantial government patronage.
