Baron Lynedoch. Entered Christ Church, Oxford (1766) but left in 1768 without taking a degree. When not touring the Continent, lived in Leicestershire, or residing in the Iberian peninsula for his wife's health. Developed strong whig sympathies in the 1780s. Returned to Scotland in the 1790s and elected MP for Perth (1794-1803). Rose through military ranks, holding a number of other posts, such as governor of Dunbarton Castle from 1829. Died at his town house, 12 Stratton Street, Piccadilly, London (1843) and was buried in Scotland.
