Son of Archibald Campbell, 9th earl of Argyll. Lived in London at the time of his father's forfeiture (1681), and offered to serve against him in his rebellion (1685). Received pension of £300 from James VII and II (1685-1688). Supported William of Orange, and crossed with him to England (1688). Restored as 10th earl of Argyll, and administered Scottish coronation oath to William and Mary (1689). Member of the 'Club'. Extraordinary Lord of Session (1694). Lord of the Treasury (1696). In alliance with duke of Queensberry, became senior member of William's ministry in Scotland (1695-1701). Created duke of Argyll (1701).
