2nd marquis (1625) and 1st duke (1643) of Hamilton, and 2nd earl of Cambridge. Called to court by his father (1620), and resided predominantly in London until 1642. Served in Germany under Gustavus Adolphus (1631-1632). King's commissioner to Scotland (1638-1639). Returned to Scotland (1642) as figurehead of the royal interest, but fled in face of Solemn League and Covenant (1643). Imprisoned in Oxford on charge of treason (1644-1646). Upon release, contemplated retirement, but eventually returned to Scotland and masterminded the 'Engagement' (1647-1648). Captured after battle of Preston, and later executed (1649).
