Attended University of Edinburgh 1733-38, Under patronage of Campbell, John (London), 2nd Duke of Argyll transferred studies to Padua, graduated MD & PhD 1738. Migrated to Banbury, Oxfordshire, establishing practice at Pye Corner, Banbury where Macaulay treated the poor free of charge Moved to London 1750/1 and settled in Poland Street. He sought and won the position of man-midwife to the British Lying-In Hospital for Married Women in Brownlow Street. Macaulay made significant contributions to the field of obstetrics and was a medical writer of unusual cases. Moved to Jermyn Street (1750s). Buried at Christ Church, Newgate.
