Groom of the Bedchamber 1714-27. Professional soldier before entering politics. Represented Berwick-upon-Tweed under Queen Anne (1710-13). Stood for Dysart Burghs 1715, held seat until 1722. Sought to contest Dysart seat again but instead stood for Aberdeen Burghs. Elected April 1722 but lost seat in October on petition. Returned in by-election for Berwick-upon-Tweed (1723-27).
