Son of Elliot, Gilbert. Called to the bar 1743. MP for Selkirkshire at by-election of 1753, with support of the Duke of Argyll (his father's patron). Held a number of other posts, including: Sheriff-depute, Roxburghshire (1748-53), lord of Treasury (1761-2), treasurer of the chamber (1762-70) keeper of the signet ([S] 1766-77) and treasurer of the navy (1770-7). Died 1777.
