Served in the military (c.1688-1706), eventually serving as aide-de-camp to the Duke of Marlborough. Briefly lived in London after retirement. Appointed Governor of Virgina (1706-1707), but never served. Governor of New York and New Jersey (1710-1720) and Jamaica (1727-1734), living in London in between as comptroller of customs. Master of the Royal Scottish Corporation (1721-1722), to which he donated £30.
