Lord Treasurer of Scotland (1596). Accompanied James VI to England (1603), and remained based there. Raised to the English peerage as baron Home of Berwick, appointed to English Privy Council and made chancellor of the exchequer (1604). Made knight of the garter (1608). Created earl of Dunbar (1605).
