Apprenticed to Gilbert Primrose, leading Edinburgh surgeon and admitted as master of the Incorporation of Surgeons (1588). Royal connections led to career as a royal surgeon and Nasmyth accompanied King James to London 1603. Appointed as royal herbalist with life tenure. Nasmyth died London but was buried in Edinburgh.
