Apprenticed to Alexander Cockburn, burgess and cooper of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Son of Robert Bryden, clerk of Coldingham. Later admitted as cooper, and took as apprentice fellow Scots, Rule, Alexander and Thompson, Thomas.
