First Viscount of Stair. Educated at Mauchline Grammar School and University of Glasgow. Admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates (1648). Appointed secretary to the commissions for treating with Charles II (1649-50). Migrated to London at the Restoration to attend Charles II. Received knighthood and reappointed one of Lords of Session 1661. Created a baron (1664) and made a Privy Councillor (1671). Retired to Holland 1682 but returned to England with William of Orange in 1688. Died in Edinburgh (1695).
