Son of first earl of Stirling. Educated at the University of Glasgow. Knighted at Whitehall 1627 and styled Lord Alexander. Embarked on expedition to colonize Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Canada (1628). Returned to Britain by 1630s. Alexander was admitted a member of the Privy Council (1635). He died in London (1638) and was buried at Stirling.
