Military career throughout and rose to rank of lieutenant-colonel. Stood for Parliament against the Earl of Ilay's candidates and won seat for Anstruther Easter Burghts (1741). One of group of Scottish members known as the Duke of Argyll's gang, voted against Hanoverians. Did not stand a second time for parliament but remained in service of the States-General. Returned to Scotland and died 1796.
