Upon inheriting realised that his personal finances were in great disorder. Fell into dependence on his neighbour, Lord Seafield. Brought into politics by his patron (1706). One of Court contingent selected to represent Scotland in the first Parliament of Great Britain. Continued in parliament for Seafield's Banffshire interests. Involved in drafting a number of bills. Appears as both a Whig and as an episcopal Tory - depending on which parliamentary list - though not always in practice. Welcome Hanoverian succession. Upon re-election voted consistently with the Court. Stood down in 1727. Died 1728.
