Initially an MP for Renfrewshire (1708-10, 1727-34), Shaw was returned as a Whig for Clackmannanshire (1722-27). Closely associated with Greenock. Fought under the Duke of Argyll in the Fifteen Rebellion. During the Fourty-Five, Shaw mobilized local support for the forces, raising the militia in Greenock despite threats from the rebels.
