Educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh, called to the bar in 1742. Held various appointments: town clerk, Glasgow (1733-53), solicitor-general in Scotland (1759-60), Lord Advocate (1760-66), Lord justice clerk (1766-89). Obtained seat in parliament, for Dumfries Burghs, through the Duke of Queensbury (1761-66) but did not attend the House until 1762. Supported the Grenville Administration. Died 1789.
