Graduated Christ Church, Oxford (1739). MP for Haddington Burghs (1741-61) and Haddingtonshire (1761-8). Held various offices: Clerk of the pipe in the Exchequer (Scotland, 1746-51) and auditor general of the Exchequer (Scotland, 1751-79). Secretary and companion to the Duke of Argyll. Died 1779.
