Elected MP for Stirlingshire (1709-10, 1729-34) and Stirling Burghs (1710-27). Identified as a Whig, especially after 1714. Politically connected with the Duke of Argyll and by 1730s had become a trusted instrument in Lord Ilay's system of electoral management. Left Westminster in 1734 and appointed governor of Jamaica. Died there in 1736.
