Advanced through the navy through the patronage of Lord Morton. Returned to Scotland in 1752 having been sent across Europe, the West Indies and Barbados. Appointed port admiral of Portsmouth (1757-67). Elected MP for Stirling Burghs(1761) on petition, winning the Earl of Bute's favour. Appears in lists as pro-Administration. Made a lord of the Admiralty (1770-1) and appointed governor of Greenwich Hospital (1771). Died 1771.
