1729-1794. Studied at Leiden. Joined the army, where he served in Scotland and England, eventually attaining the rank of major. Married in 1758, and subsequently moved with his wife to Hillington, Norfolk. Severely indebted for much of his time in Norfolk. MP for Dumfries Burghs (1784-1790) and Wyemouth (1791-1794), during which time he supported abolition of slavery.
