Called to bar in 1722. Appointed solicitor-general for Scotland (1737-42) and made Lord Advocate (1746-54). Upon death of cousin Grant, William filled seat as MP for Elgin Burghs. Raised to Lord of session as Lord Prestongrange (1754-64). Died 1764.
