1st earl of Stirling (1633). Probably did not accompany James VI & I to England immediately upon union of the crowns, but soon appointed gentleman of the privy chamber to Prince Henry (1607) and gentleman usher to Prince Charles (1612). Attempted to establish colony of 'New Scotland' in modern Nova Scotia, 1621-1632. Held several government offices under James VI & I and Charles I, principally secretary of state for Scotland (1626), which he discharged from London. Enjoyed successful career as a published poet.
